Premiere Up the River, Iron and Glass part 1

Setting Begins on the Mosaic World, a planet on the edge of the Uncharted Territories. The Mosaic was built centuries ago by the Xemm, as an experiment in universal peace.

The Mosaic The Mosaic World has thousands of 'Enclaves', each given to a single planetary culture. The Enclaves have only natural barriers between the various enclaves. While wars do break out from time to time, the majority of disputes are resolved by the Council, a gathering of enclave representatives in constant session in Mozay City, above the equator.

The surface of the planet is torn by the throes of long-dead volcanoes. The planet's oceans have filled these cracks, creating the famous Mosaic effect that gives the surface an assembled appearance, separated into thousands of 'tiles' of arable, well-irrigated land. Each tile is home to 1 planetary culture. The Luxan Enclave, for example, is Tile 440, next door to the Ilanic Enclave on Tile 439.

Transportation on the Mosaic world is almost exclusively by skimmer and water-transport. Several of the Enclaves operate commerce planet-style spaceports, and space travel to and from the planet is common. The tiles themselves vary widely. Some are rocky, and shot through with miles of underground caverns. Others are hilly, or flat open fields. The tiles vary widely in size, and the rivers have always been recognized as the only borders.

100 cycles ago, the Xemm vanished from the planet. The Council has maintained a fragile accomodation between the enclaves, but that accord is threatened every day. The council, which under the Xemm was a place for reasoned debate and compromise, has become a mad house of veiled threats, black mail, and backstabbing, both diplomatic and literal.

Cast Czubay,"Old Soldier"
Nebari, Warrior 6, Diplomat 1
Czubay served the Nebari Enclave in its defense force for nearly 40 cycles. He was forcibly retired by an unfriendly change in the Enclave government, and appointed to the dubiously honorable position of Enclave Representative. He is accompanying Councilor Gier and his bodyguard Shar on the trip to the Council. Czubay has few illusions about what awaits him, and brought his sword as well as his pen on the journey.

Geir, "Right Honorable Bastard"
Banik, Aristocrat 7
The Baniks of the Mosaic are unaware of the fall of their people and the gutting of their planet by the Peacekeepers. Geir himself has had his seat in the Council for most of his life. He loves the parry-and-thrust of interspecies politics. Geir is one of the few who believe that the Council is doing its job, and that the Mosaic experiment is a success.

Shar, "Beauty is the Beast"
Ilanic, Commando 7
Without a war to fight with the Scorvians, the Ilanics of the Enclave have followed the Luxan example and serve as mercenaries and military advisors all over the Mosaic. The Ilanics are less-well suited to the role in the main, but Shar is a sparkling exception. Shar''s employer, the Banik Councilor Gier, has never been disappointed with his purchase.

Vana, "Driftwood"
Delvian, Priest 5, Rogue 2
The Mosaic is simply too crowded to allow monks the solitude they need. Few Pa'us reach the 4th level, with the demands and desires of secular life pressing so close. So it was a very great disappointment when Valenn lost the way while seeking the 6th. Valenn wanders the Mosaic now, and has taken up with Feather and Dr. Taladari. The 3 of them are a formidable foe for law enforcement in any enclave they happen upon.

Dr. Taladari, "Money Talks"
Hynerian, Scientist 1, Scavenger 1, Rogue 5
Chemistry and Biology proved too challenging, and Garbology too filthy. The art of the Dodge, however, suited perfectly. Far from the haughty nobles of the Hynerian Enclave, and taking full advantage of the underestimation that comes with his stature, "Dr." Taladari has a bottle for every ache, and a salve for every pain. He also has a finger for every pocket, and a way out planned for every way in.

Feather, "Dead Can Dance"
Luxan, Rogue 7
Cowardice is death among the Luxans. Failing in battle is regrettable, and falling earns a lament. A one time tralk, cutpurse, and most recently a dancer in Dr. Taladari's strange troupe, Feather is dead to her family and her people.
